About the Book

Dublin's voluntary hospitals were one of the glories of its medical history. The folding of seven of Dublin's oldest hospitals into two bright modern ones in the last ten years saw the closing of a great and honourable tradition of medical service. Many of these hospitals were able to trace their history back more than two hundred years. In 1961, seven teaching hospitals - the Adelaide, Baggot Street, Sir Patrick Duns, the Meath, Mercers, Steevens and the National Childrens Hospital - formed the union called the Federated Dublin Voluntary Hospitals. This is the story of the development of the Federated hospitals and how they were ultimately transferred to Tallaght and St James. This was of course a process not without difficulty, especially in the case of the Adelaide, the last overtly Protestant hospital in the Republic. These hospitals were all connected with the Medical School at Trinity College, and this book brings together distinguished authors and specialists from that tradition in a deeply interesting over-view of the growth points of the changes in Irish medicine in the last years of the twentieth century. With more than forty distinguished authors, this work provides fascinating new slant on the background to the creation of the new hospitals. It serves as a major reference, showing how specialty by specialty developed in the second half of the twentieth century.

About the Author :
The Editor: Dav id FitzPatrick is a surgeon who b egan his medical career in the Adelaide just as the Federation was formed, worked in Steevens and other Federation hospitals and ended his career in Tallaght three years after the hospital there opened.
