About the Book

This scale is the most comprehensive examination of newborn behaviour available and is used in both clinical and research settings around the world. It has been used to study the effects of intrauterine deprivation, maternal substance use, casesarian-section, undernutrition, preterm birth and other pre- and perinatal variables and has also been used in cross cultural studies. Its value as a reliable research instrument has been established for 20 years. The scale is being used increasingly by clinicians in their clinical practice as a way of sensitising parents to the capacities of their newborn infants and as a way of identifying concerns about the baby. With this in mind, this new edition of the scale manual is particularly designed to make it easier for clinicians to use the scale in this way. Guidelines for adaptations for use in clinical practice are clearly outlined. As with previous editions, the manual also provides background information on the scale and it presents information on the administration of each item and detailed criteria for scoring. Information on training is also included.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction T. B. Brazelton; 2. The standard administration of the NBAS; 3. Manual for scoring the NBAS items; 4. Research uses of the NBAS; 5. Clinical uses of the NBAS C. H. Keefer, D. J. Karl, J. A. Beal, P. N. Rissmiller, H. Munck, I. A. Cardone, L. Gilkerson, D. Wolke and J. Gardner Cole.

Review :
'This book will be of value to professionals working in the field of neonatology and of special interest to neonatal nurses wishing to use behavioural assessment to enhance care.' Merryl Harvey, Nursing Times '... third edition of the NBAS ... this sensitive and comprehensive description of infant behaviour, illustrated with photographs, is both interesting to read and a useful practical guide for neonatal nurses seeking to understand the capabilities of individual infants.' Margaret M. Sparshott, Journal of Neonatal Nursing 'Over the years it has stood the test of time and has been used extensively in research ... interesting and readable.' Lilly Dubowitz, Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of London 'I highly recommend this book to any member of the health care team who routinely works with neonates and families. It provides a concise, well-organised, accessible clinical tool for enhancing the counseling of normal and at-risk newborns and their families and will greatly increase the practitioner's appreciation for the complex abilities of the newborn.' Esther Entin, Archives of Family Medicine 'I bought my first edition of this wonderful book 18 years ago. I was a neonatal resident in Missouri and it was my tutor on the reactive and adaptive behaviour of babies. ... I have used it ever since to teach health visitors, general practitioners and paediatricians about the astonishing abilities of babies. The Neonational Behavioural Assessment Scale is still the most complete schedule of its kind available for clinical research, and the range of published work using it is large. ... This third edition is now twice as long and has new pictures. I can replace my creased and thumbed paperback with a quality hardback which is simply a treasure to possess and a delight to open. Buy yours now!' Tom Hutchison Current Paediatrics
