About the Book

Hadrians Wall Path runs for 85 miles from coast to coast along the line of the Roman Wall completed in AD122 under the Emperor Hadrian. This National Trail crosses northern England from Irish Sea to North Sea and offers many chances to look at the forts, milecastles and interpretation centres within this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This guidebook contains all you need to plan and enjoy a classic week's walking.

The route is clearly waymarked and well supported by public transport. This guidebook is almost unique in giving equal priority to walking the route from west-to-east as east-to-west.  It explains clearly the pros and cons of each direction, and gives them equal space. This book provides all you need to plan and enjoy a classic week's walking in a compact package:

  • detailed west-to-east and east-to-west route descriptions updated in mid-2025
  • mapping at 1:50,000 on 43 pages with miles numbered for each direction
  • history and anatomy of the Wall, with details of forts and visitor centres
  • wildlife explained and illustrated for the various habitats
  • information about public transport, travel and accommodation
  • lavishly illustrated, with over 100 colour photos
  • on rainproof paper.

About the Author :

After a long career in education, information technology and academic publishing, Jacquetta became interested in long-distance walking and trekking. After completing the West Highland Way, her first long walk, in 1998 she progressed to Mount Kilimanjaro, which she has since summited four times by different routes. She is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild and in 2016 won its Award for Excellence (jointly with Max Landsberg) for their jointly authored guidebook Trek to Everest. She has walked Hadrian's Wall Path twice, most recently east to west in 2025.

The late Gordon Simm was a keen hiker who had been walking National Trails since 1989. He was a talented landscape and wildlife photographer who had won awards for his work. He also wrote the Cleveland Way guidebook for Rucksack Readers.

Review :

The guide is profusely illustrated with attractive page layouts that combine text with fine colour photographs and panels on features of interest.

There are now a considerable number of guides to Hadrian’s Wall Path, but this one rates highly for its convenience of use, its attractive format, and the clear presentation of the route and other information.

I was most impressed by this guide. It has a wealth of information, provided more detail, and filled in more gaps in my knowledge than I thought was possible.

It is clearly well researched and basing the guide on a West to East journey is clearly novel, as many start the walk from the East, but does not detract from the benefits whichever direction you choose … A worthy purchase for anyone interested in Hadrian’s Wall or Roman Britain.
