About the Book

At the start of the 21st century, people want practical tools. They also want a spiritual vision, because they recognise that simply by itself, the "material" level of life doesn't work. The collapsing, downsizing and merging of the traditional industries are attempts at consolidation to achieve financial efficiency and greater profitability. They are also signs of the end of a business era. Ok, the "dot.com" bubble was an attempt to start afresh with a new paradigm. It was a nice try but there was still something missing. So the questions exist: "How do we want to live in the new millennium?" "If material success alone doesn't cut the mustard, what are the real components of a fulfilled life?" "How can we enjoy the same levels of material success without polluting ourselves out of existence?" "How do we live sustainably without ending up in worldwide conflict over ownership of apparently dwindling natural resources?" "Can we live spiritually, sustainably and successfully all at the same time, and what would that look like?" This book describes my personal journey through the last ten years of the 20th century, exploring the learnings and teachings of some of the most popular business "gurus", like Tom Peters, Stephen Covey and Peter Senge. In my consulting work I found that the teachings of these authors were inspiring, but none actually worked well in isolation, and as I explored more and more teachings, I looked for common threads and ways of synthesising and integrating them. I was looking for a compete tool kit. I found a common structure to some of the thinking and this intrigued me. Five fundamental principles from eastern teaching allowed me to align these structures and gave me the criteria for what a complete tool kit would like. When I realised that these fundamental principles were part of the structure of nature itself, this gave me the final key for introducing a sixth element that clearly links spiritual and material approaches to success in business and life.
