About the Book

This is the true story of Patrick, who was born with haemophilia and contracted HIV through a tainted blood transfusion when he was seven. Lyanne's fun-loving older brother Patrick was always on the go. He played the piano and loved to toboggan, skate, and ski. Lyanne barely noticed that he needed daily shots because of his haemophilia. But she didn't know that Patrick had a secret. Because of a tainted blood transfusion, he had become HIV positive. Nobody but their parents knew. So Patrick continued his life of laughter, friendship, and accomplishment, winning trophies and awards for everything he tried. When he developed full-blown AIDS, Patrick decided to go public so that others would realise that HIV and AIDS are preventable. Illustrated with photographs taken throughout his life, Patrick's Wish tells the story of a boy who embraced hope and laughter until his last day. His wish to fight HIV and AIDS through education continues to inspire young people through his family's foundation, Patrick4Life. Patrick had one wish, to raise awareness and find a cure. This compelling story is aimed at making his wish come true.

About the Author :
Rebecca Upjohn has worked as an architectural photographer, sheep farmhand, bookshop helper, and more recently a writer and film producer for an independent short film for children. She raises her two boys, Harris and Emmett, with her husband, Don, dividing their time between urban life in Toronto and rural life in south-western New Hampshire. Harris' reaction to a homeless man asleep on a downtown pavement when he was four, inspired this book. Karen Mitchell is the mother of two beautiful daughters and is the baby of nine children. Her Mother Alice created the love of story telling in her by sharing classic stories each evening around the dinner table. She has published 7 books for young readers and is an elementary school principal. Even though she never met Patrick Fortin she views him as one of bravest men she has ever heard about. Patrick is her role model for believing that wishes can come true.

Review :
(This book) puts a human face on an awful disease. The book also gives factual information about HIV/AIDS, and dispels many myths.-- "Resource Links" Mitchell and Upjohn aim to cultivate tolerance and curb ignorance of HIV/AIDS, and in 24 pages they do so admirably.-- "Counterpoise" You could dip into this anthology anywhere and find something interesting...excellent.-- "NOW Toronto" Patrick's Wish is simply written for children ages 7-10, filled with beautiful photos of Patrick taken throughout his life. Patrick's Wish ends with a list of 9 important things Patrick would want the reader to know about HIV and AIDS. These 9 simple statements constitute the most effective AIDS-HIV awareness education effort for elementary age children to date. Patrick's Wish will help Patrick's wish, to find a cure for HIV/AIDS, come true.-- "Midwest Book Review"
