About the Book

Part peepshow, part church box confessional, The Devil You Dont Know offers a glimpse into the lives of two willful and alluring young Newfoundlanders as they sift through the rubble of their depraved relationship. Set concurrently in St. John's and Halifax, the play lends voice to the new post-hope-twenty-something generation Newfoundlander. Pocked with tales of shoplifting, abortion, self-mutilation, inflatable lovers, career delusions, drunken hooliganism, and the pros and cons of oral sex, The Devil You Dont Know is not for the faint of spirit. It is an ambitious black comedy of the new Newfoundland, containing no salt fish and no ugly sticks. Noted for its unflinching, tongue-in-cheek honesty, The Devil You Dont Know is liberally adapted from the award-winning novel Down to the Dirt by Joel Thomas Hynes.

About the Author :
Joel Thomas Hynes is a Canadian writer, actor and director known for his irreverent, oftentimes dark and uproarious characters and a raw, unflinching vision of modern underground Canada. His 2017 novel We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night won the Governor General's Award for English-language fiction and the Winterset Award and was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Sherry White is a Canadian film and television actress, writer and filmmaker, best known for her work as a producer and writer for the television series MVP, Rookie Blue and Saving Hope and as director of the feature film Crackie. She won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Screenplay, at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018, for the film Maudie.

Review :
"Funny, touching, and sometimes heartbreaking, but always achingly true to life. One of the best nights I've ever spent in the theatre." - Mary Walsh "Two of the most powerful voices in Atlantic Canada team up to bring us The Devil You Don't Know - at its heart a love story of uncompromising brutality, honesty, and yes, beauty." - Robert Chafe, playwright - author of "Tempting Providence" "...intense, raw and visceral theatrical experience..." "Hynes and White's dialogue has utilitarian, unpretentious snap!"
