About the Book

Fiction. Following the critical success of her first novel Sextant comes Maya Merrick's new novel THE HOLE SHOW. It follows four characters who meet each other in 1970s Montreal to form a controversial theatre troupe. Hicklin, the collector, leaves Vancouver under traumatic circumstances to find himself living a bohemian lifestyle on the streets of a Montreal caught in the midst of political upheaval. Billy, the crossdressing butcher boy, leaves the farm and changes his name to Beau. Dahlia is the Westmount ballerina who severs all contact with her previous life to take on the emotionally frigid persona of Dolly. Finally there is Luce, the mysterious teenage runaway. Merrick has created a world of disparate characters who come together to cope with their own personal transformations. She also explores the blurry territory between art and obscenity to create a multi-layered, finely crafted, provocative novel.

About the Author :
Maya Merrick was born in North Vancouver, B.C., in 1974. She moved to Montreal in 1994, and flirted briefly with higher education before she dropped out to wander aimlessly for a number of years. Finding a life of warehouse labour and cash register punching somewhat unfulfilling, she turned to bartending and writing as more enjoyable pursuits. Since publishing her first novel she has been an invited guest at Word on the Street and Canzine in Toronto, The Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver, and The Pilot in Montreal. Her work has appeared in Geist, Matrix, and an excerpt from her novel The Hole Show appeared in The Portable Conundrum.

Review :
"The Hole Show Criminates in a Blast of Surreal Fireworks, As if Merrick is a Master Puppeteer in the Weirdest Puppet Show you'll Ever Witness. Never has Reading a Book Felt so Much Like Settling Down with a Cozy Cup of Hallucinogenic Tea, Being Read to by Little Elves from a Book About the Quiet Revolution, and Then put on a Poetic Tilt-A-Wiurl. An Impressive Novel." "The Holf Show is Maya Merrick's Second Novel and is a toothsome Trawl Through Montreal Veriti-There are Freaks, Deformities, and What Used to be Called Clubfoots, All in a Henry Danger-Esque Jamboree. It is the World of Sextant, Merrick's First Book, Plus a Little of the Historical Sweep of Michel Trembly Complete with Silverfish crawling up from the Drains. The Hole Show Really Crackles Across its 360 Pages."
