About the Book

It's in the news every day: divorce is tough on kids. MacGregor knows how tough, and she has prepared a down-to-earth guide that genuinely helps. Included are discussions of many topics troubling kids when their parents divorce: reasons parents get divorced: ways the divorce will change kids' lives: kids' feelings about divorce: things kids can do to help them feel better: who to talk to: what's likely to happen next. This is not just a book for kids about divorce, though. It's a book about life after divorce, too. The kids in MacGregor's book are dealing with visitation and custody and straddling two households and making it all work. Maybe it isn't easy, but it is possible and it is Cynthia MacGregor is the author of 50 books for parents and kids, many with a focus on helping kids through difficult situations, including her newest book Jigsaw Puzzle Family, along with The Divorce Helpbook for Kids: The Divorce Helpbook for Teens: Why Do People Die?: Why Do We Have to Move?: and Why Do We Need Another Baby? A divorced mother herself, with many divorced friends, Cynthia brings real-life experience to the subjects of her books. 'The Divorce Helpbook for Kids...answers a lot of questions... and suggests exercises for dealing with stress... emphasizes that divorce is not the child's fault and that their parents are divorcing each other, not them. These are things all children need to hear when their parents are splitting up.' --- Psychology Today 'Using humor and realistic scenarios, (MacGregor) places a positive spin on changes kids face when their parents divorce...this book could make a tremendous difference for children.' --- Marriage and Family Therapy News The Kentucky Association for Marriage and Family Therapy '...chock-full of solutions that a child or a parent can implement to not only help that child feel better, but to also teach skills that will keep the child from being pulled into the middle of parental disagreements...practical help for real kids with real parents living real lives...' --- National Association of Social Workers, Mississippi Chapter 'MacGregor steers kids through what can seem like a minefield of changes triggered by their parents' divorce. The book offers a wealth of information and inspiration in kid-sized portions ...' --- Richmond Parents 'The strengths of the book are the various alternatives suggested to conflicts that arise and the suggestions that readers take questions to parents or other close, responsible adults.' --- School Library Journal 'This is an essential book to be read by both parents and their children separately and together. It will enable each child and his or her parents to experience the divorce as a joint learning process toward greater personal growth. The inclusion of a 'Bill of Rights for Children Whose Parents Are Divorced,' the 'Glossary: What All Those Big Words Mean,' and 'Resources for Parents and Children' can be of enormous help to divorced families.' --- Mel Krantzler, Ph.D., Author, The New Creative Divorce 'The Divorce Helpbook for Kids is an excellent book to help young people understand what the family is going through. It explains legal terms such as custody and helps the child to know what to expect and how to behave to avoid problems....The wealth of information and healthy suggestions will save the family many pitfalls, heartbreak and pain.' --- Pat Palmer, Ed.D. Author, I Wish I Could Hold Your Hand, Co-author, Teen Esteem 'Packed with practical answers for children, parents, grandparents, and for child and family therapists, this book offers a wealth of information and inspiration in kid-sized portions, including a list of ways kids can help themselves feel better and suggests adult allies they can turn to if they're still confused... Buy this book!' --- Menstuff: The National Men's Resource (online review: www.menstuff.org) '...steers youngsters through what can seem like a minefield of changes triggered by their parent's divorce... not just a book about divorce, but... about life after divorce, too... dealing with visitation and custody and straddling two households... and making it all work.' --- Singles Mall (online review: www.singlesmall.com) 'This book goes a long way to help address change, loss, fear and sadness when a family breaks up.' ---- AAMFT Division News 'MacGregor... has mastered the art of communicating in a friendly, conversational manner that children will respond to. Her advice, delivered in a calm tone, is both practical and appropriate for the youngest readers or middle-school youth. Children struggling to cope with a parent leaving home would benefit greatly from MacGregor's simple and effective Presentation.' --- Youth Today
