About the Book

Far from home, eight-year-old John Cameron Fraser watched his father ride away in 1842, leaving him alone in Ireland to grow up during the catastrophic potato famine and the plagues that followed. John Fraser relates his story in his own words, as he travels to England and qualifies as a marine engineer at a time of great change in ship design and construction. Although with a secure future and career in front of him, he forsakes it all, voyaging to 'the far beyond' in search of a better life and a more equitable society. There in a remote corner of the world, comes lost love and found fortune amid the extreme hardship and violence of the goldfields. Real characters and actual historical events bring John Fraser's mostly true and colourful tale vividly to life, reaching its unexpected conclusion in the aftermath of a colonial battlefield. A former journalist, Warwick Thompson has long been fascinated by the life story of his greatgrandparents, John Cameron Fraser and Elizabeth Mary MacKay, especially John Fraser's experiences and the remarkable events and times through which he lived. Re-tracing the path his great-grandparents had followed from Scotland 140 years earlier brought to true perspective what John Fraser and others like him had endured and yet achieved, inspiring him now to write the story as an historical biography in John Fraser's own words. Today Warwick, with his wife Judy, lives much of the time in southern New Zealand, among the very mountains trodden by his great-grandfather, three generations before.
