About the Book

The material in Classical Studies Activities Book 5 Athenian Art and Sculpture has been organised into two separate parts. One part covers the architecture and the four architectural set pieces - Propylaia, Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike. The second part covers the sculpture and the sculptural set pieces used in preparation for the NCEA Level 2 Unit of study. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that the students have a clear copy of the set pieces and to ensure that they understand the context of the Acropolis and its post-Persian War buildings which emerged from the Periclean Building Programme of the 5th century BC when Athens was in her 'Golden Age'. The Activities can be used for classroom tasks, as individual activities or as homework. These Activities include material suitable for all assessment styles. A range of Activities has been prepared. The students would find it helpful to have access to The City of Athena, Raewyn Gilmour, Polygraphia, 2007. This textbook has background material which will support the study of Greek architecture and sculpture in the context of 6th and 5th century BC Athens and will clarify the events which were taking place at the time of the great achievements and experiments in sculpture and architecture. The aim of the Activities is to immerse the students in Greek architecture and sculpture and to encourage them to find material beyond the confines of the Level 2 course. Teachers who purchase this resource may copy the material for the use of their own students.
