About the Book

This text is the first part of a series for primary language teachers. It provides a practical guide on how to introduce foreign language teaching into the primary curriculum. It is aimed at primary classroom teachers, whether in state or independent schools, experienced in early foreign language teaching, or just beginning. The authors provide in detail the key areas to be examined when planning a primary language project. These key areas include organizational questions at management and classroom level, teaching aims and objectives, available resources, time-scale and course content. The importance of learner progression is examined and suggestions are provided on methods of measuring and recording progress which are suitable for primary learners. Advice and case examples are also offered on how to cater successfully for progression from primary to secondary, with emphasis on the key role of close liaison between primary and secondary schools. The activities suggested range from role-play and mime to practical activites, such as cooking and making greeting cards, and are all based on the ideas of involving pupils in active learning. The book also gives reference information on the major language projects set up in England and Scotland since 1989. For those primary teachers who are not language specialists, the book includes a section on how to approach teaching in the target language, which includes a variety of practical suggestions.

Table of Contents:
Making the right start; planning for progression; methods and activties that work - good practice; teaching in the target language; primary languages project; resources.
