About the Book

"By turns lyrical, analytical and humorous, one of the least read of Warner's fictions (reprinted here for the first time since 1932), too short to be considered a novel, too long to be a short story." So writes Claire Harman of "The Salutation", the title story of this collection of Sylvia Townsend Warner's short stories. Written as a sequel to Warner's acclaimed 1927 novel, "Mr Fortune's Maggot", the reader does not need to be familiar with the earlier novel to follow the story of Timothy Fortune's continuing travails. "The sunstruck, starving man who turns up at Mrs Bailey's house in the Brazilian pampas could be any desperate stranger trailing his sorrows around a foreign country, half-hoping to die of them. The important thing is that he once was happy and is unlikely to be so again...[Warner] once said that "The Salutation" was 'the purest, the least time-serving story I ever wrote'. It is also one of her best and long overdue for re-publication." The other stories in this collection illustrate the range and versatility of an accomplished and at times astonishing writer. There are echoes of Thomas Hardy and T.F. Powys, but Warner is subtly subversive even as she entertains, and the result is uniquely her own.
