About the Book

Dear Clare Howitzer - I am in my early thirties, slightly bald, with a degree in non-smoking studies at Soup Hales University, at 15 stone rather overweight for my height (5ft) and am generally considered attractive [reply] have you thought of taking a course in New Labour self assertiveness.. I can recommend an agency that teaches Kung Fu; When John Prescott, described as Deputy Prime Minister, called on the Firemen's Union to produce a "constructive response to the Government's request for clarification of the extent to which it would respond to serious fires" the union at once accused the Government of "moral blackmail". We lovers of tradition and ritual and majestic language have resigned ourselves to the loss of the traditional British strike, scarcely know these last barren 25 years. Is it against all hope, about to come back again?

About the Author :
Michael Wharton is truly conservative and in consequence he finds the world in equal measure horrifying and hilarious. He can say things which most journalists would be too cowardly to write, even though most would think them. He has a marvelous eye for the absurd as in his creation of Harry and Janet Nodule, the well know traffic-jam fans of Turgis Hill in South London; or the letters of Brian Gumbs, reader in Non-smoking studies at Soup Hales University...

Review :
"A treasure-house of truth, fantasy and wit". Kingsley Amis. "Michael Wharton's genius has been to express, through a theatre of his own creation, the aggravations which seize some of us in the small hours and keep us fretfully awake". W.F. Deedes, Evening Standard. "Some excellent writers adorn the English Press in its Silver Age. Only one is touched with genius". Geoffery Wheatcroft, Observer. "The funniest and the wisest writer in England". Richard West, Literary Review. "His wit and poetic imagination have made him the outstanding columnist of his generation". Independent."
