About the Book

Sascha Lasserson came to London from Russia in 1914 and stayed on to become - over a period of sixty years - one of the greatest violin teachers in the country. A product of the amazing class of Leopold Auer in St Petersburg, and in this country he was the embodiment of the traditions and standards of that class. This book, an affectionate composite portrait of him by his pupils, describes him not only as a teacher but also as man and artist. It also provides fascinating portraits of some of his great friends and contemporaries at the St Petersburg Conservatoire.

About the Author :
Michael Lasserson was a doctor for whom medicine was as much an art as a science. He was especially passionate about the links between medicine and music. A keen double bass player, in 2004 he cofounded the European Doctors Orchestra, an institution that continues to perform in concert halls throughout Europe.

Review :
Michael Lasserson has compiled and edited a most valuable book of reminiscences of Sascha’s students. Included are letters, excerpts from violin repertoire such as the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, violin studies, and Sascha’s warm-up and finger independence exercises. But more particularly, the book contains a detailed description of Sascha Lasserson as a teacher, artist and a fine human being. It offers much insight into the history and lineage of violin playing throughout the Western world. - Miriam Morris - Australian Music Teachers Register
