About the Book

The window is the key to appreciating the beauty of Irish classical architecture, and this landmark book will bring to the Irish public an understanding of the unique heritage of Irish windows. In any street or town windows are the focal point of classically proportioned buildings designed according to Greek and Roman principles of architecture. The fascinating story of how we swapped dark, defensive medieval castles for the elegant buildings of the Georgian era is told by Dr Nessa M. Roche, architectural conservationist. It is superbly illustrated by photographer Hugh MacConville, who has recorded exquisite window designs in the most unlikely settings. Written in an accessible and popular style, this book is for the general reader interested in lifestyle, house design, heritage and the environment. The book includes sections on: how and why windows are arranged as they are, history of windows in Irish architecture, past glass-makers, joiners and related trades and more.

Table of Contents:
Introduction: Windows - life and light. Chapter 1: Why our buildings look the way they do - proportions in Irish window design. Chapter 2: The long journey towards light - from Renaissance castle to Georgian square. Chapter 3: Change and innovation - the Victorian era. Chapter 4: Know your glass - identifying old glass by its appearance. Chapter 5: window craftsmen - glass-making and glass-makers, glaziers and joiners. Chapter 6: Continuing the tradition - keeping old windows alive. Chapter 7: Maintaining and improving your sash windows. Glossary. Further reading.

About the Author :
Nessa Roche studied glass design at the National College of Art and Design in the 1980s and worked in that field for a number of years before turning to her other great interest, the history and conservation of old buildings. Her studies culminated in a doctorate in Architectural Conservation at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh on the history of windows in Irish architecture. She is now a freelance architectural historian/conservationist specialising in fenestration and glass. Hugh MacConville is a photographer specialising in landscapes and buildings. Together with Frank MacDonald and Peigin Doyle, he produced the very well-received book 'Ireland's earthen houses'.

Review :
'In many ways a relaxed social history, it is also a beautifully designed book, graced with Hugh MacConville's photographs, which, in keeping with the tone of the book, reveal the rich diversity of windows in an everyday context...It should also make us open our eyes to the subtle art and lasting value of the simple sash window', Eileen Battersby, The Irish Times, 20 January 2000.
