About the Book

For Africa to realise its potential and create the socio economic conditions that its people aspire to, it needs organisations that can compete in a fast changing, complex global environment. This will only be achieved if African organisations grow their talent and leadership skills to add to the pool of skills and talent on the continent. In the modern economy countries, cities and organisations, both public and private sector, need to make themselves "talent attractive" since talent and skills are a prerequisite for sustainable investment. This book provides insight into what leading thinkers and organisations do to build, develop and retain talent. Review :
"It is pleasing to see HR professionals in South Africa responding to this business priority of ensuring that organisations have the required talent to not only navigate these challenging and complex times, but to thrive in them. Shaping Africa's Talent is therefore a timely contribution to the ongoing education of HR professionals and indeed business leaders about examples of the best practices we have in our country on Talent Management. "Congratulations to the contributors who wrote the chapters of this book and I hope this is the beginning of a trend of HR practitioners in South Africa informing the world about the best that we have to offer in Human Resources Management in our country." Mike Brown, Chief Executive: Nedbank "One of the key challenges in 21st-century leadership is talent management. The challenge in Africa is heightened by the large diversity of the continent. Shaping Africa's Talent offers both a context and appreciation of the emerging challenges and strategies to address these. Whilst acknowledging the opportunities of new technology and enhanced communication systems, there is also a strong emphasis on employers developing strong employer brands that are attractive to employees and that can withstand the appeal and the pull of the international companies, which are also seeking to attract the very same talent." Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, Executive Director of TMMO, Botswana Mmasekgoa served two terms as Deputy Secretary-General for the Commonwealth "Africa's future development will depend on the development of its talent. Shaping Africa's Talent goes a long way towards providing companies doing business in Africa with a roadmap to manage and develop talent in a more focused and professional manner. "The case studies and best practices featured in Shaping Africa's Talent also offer excellent guidelines to learn from and shape your own talent strategies in Africa." Antoinette Irvine, Human Resources Vice President - Global Supply Chain - Unilever "At last! An honest and comprehensive look at Africa's vast talent pool - at once a platform for Africa taking its rightful place in the world as a hub of diverse talent, but also looking at the need for ongoing talent development that is relevant to current challenges of automation, where the world of innovation presupposes a tomorrow where an unskilled workforce will be replaced by robots, or an influx of a skilled Diaspora, that will further preserve the current talent pool status quo that is largely unskilled and undeveloped." Nene Molefi, Managing Director - Mandate Molefi HR Consultants
