About the Book

Beyond The Mist introduces us to the rich and beautiful world of Irish mythology and mines it for wisdom we can use every day. In an increasingly materialistic world, ancient mythology is invaluable for understanding the issues, feelings and conflicts we've repressed either as individuals or as a culture - death, the transitory nature of life, the inevitability of separateness and the sacredness of the land. By retelling ancient stories in contemporary form, Peter O'Connor explores the link between the world of Irish mythology, the world of dreams and our daily lives. Irish myths can provide insight into the repressed aspects of our inner life and show us how to deal with these issues. Through metaphor and story we are able to find a place for universal themes such as love, hate, rage, despair and death within our own psyche and imagination instead of projecting them onto others. Beyond The Mist shows the value of ancient myths for modern people and seeks to remind us of the sacred, mystical space we all inhabit, where life is not a straight line but an eternal circle of birth, life and death. Far and away the best informed and most successful commentary on how the Irish tales go to the heart of all our lives. Gearoid O'Crualaoich, Head of Irish Cultural Studies, National University of Ireland In the Bard Summer School . . . we have been seeking to uncover the meaning and contemporary relevance of our ancient mythic tradition. How wonderful to read Peter O'Connor, in Australia, uncovering the same resonance. Combining his own roots and love of story with his professional work as a psychotherapist, he offers a challenging and insightful read. Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop, Director of the Bard Summer School
