About the Book

This text focuses on the major writings of the English diplomat, linguist, and scholar, Ernest Mason Satow (1843-1929). Satow was active on the British diplomatic staff in Japan from 1862 to 1882 during the final years of the Tokugawa period and the beginning of the Meiji government; he became minister plenipotentiary to Japan (1895-1900) and to China (1900-1906), as well as holding diplomatic posts in Siam (now Thailand), Uruguay, and Morocco. After retirement he continued to write and to lecture on legal subjects in Cambridge. A collector of Japanese and Korean books, his bibliographical researches resulted in several articles on the history of printing in Japan and Korea, and he established that movable-printing in Korea was more than 100 years older than the books that came from Gutenberg's press in the West. This text assembles all Satow's major works on diverse subjects notably the Japanese language, histories and guidebooks of Japan, bibliographical works, autobiographical records of diplomatic life and his "Guide to Diplomatic Practice", a work that went to several editions.
