About the Book

Frantz Fanon was one of the great figures of mid-century revolt in the Third World. Born in Martinique, Fanon trained as a psychiatrist in France prior to taking a post in colonial Algeria. Here he met with the Front de Liberation National which was fighting a bitter war of independence. He subsequently worked with them as a propagandist and ambassador. Although he died from leukaemia at the age of 36, he managed to produce a number of memorable writings on race, racism, psychiatry and anti-colonialism. This biography aims to go beyond the myths surrounding the revolutionary hero to reveal Fanon as a complex figure, above and beyond the theorist of 1960s anti-colonial violence.

About the Author :
Born in Sunderland, David Macey has translated some twenty books from the French. He is the author of The Lives of Michel Foucault and edited The Penguin Dictionary of Critical Theory. David Macey lives in Leeds.

Review :
'This year's biographical tour de force...' Richard Gott, New Statesman; 'Fanon deserves to be read and remembered' The Economist; 'Quietly authoritative, it is the best book yet written on Frantz Fanon' The Irish Times; 'This book is a good introduction to the history of modern Martinique and the Algerian War, and it is a fascinating study of a passionate and intelligent thinker.' Scotland on Sunday; 'Macey's sensitive biography rescues the man from the classroom of "post-colonial studies" and places him in the context of his origins in a post-war French Caribbean haunted by slavery and racism' The Times; 'David Macey's life of Fanon provides, as background, an excellent guide to the history of French decolonisation and the intellectual debates of post-war France' The Economist; 'This biography by David Macey, a writer skilled in making difficult French writer [is] easily understandable...an excellent addition to the library of books concerned with anti-colonialism. It is not just a lucid and well-researched account of the man and his works. It is one of the best books about contemporary history to have been published in recent years, a wonderful evocation of an entire era when the fall of empires brought politics, psychiatry and revolution to the forefront of the global agenda.' Literary Review; 'Probably the most comprehensive biography yet published about the revolutionary author. Written with exceptional restraint and poist, Frantz Fanon, A Life is a moving, absorbing narrative of an unusual and important life...essential reading for anyone interested in history and an invaluable companion to a true understanding of Fanon's writings' Awaaz
