About the Book

"The first Adult Learners' Week was held in 1992. It began at a time of struggle, when adults had to assert that they could be the best judges of what was worth studying, and that they had a right to claim modest investment from government to back them in their choices." This observation by Alan Tuckett, in one of his many columns for the Times Educational Supplement, when he was NIACE chief executive, goes to the heart of what the man and the adult learning movement he continues to promote are about. When motivated to learn, people quickly see the benefi ts of learning for themselves, the wider community and the economy; clear evidence suggests too that state-funded support should be seen as an investment, not just a cost. In Seriously Useless Learning, Ian Nash, his commissioning editor, revisits the collection of Tuckett's writings and asks why so much of this invaluable adult education is repeatedly pushed to the margins and why politicians fail to see the merits of an entitlement to funding beyond basic school education. From English as a second language (Esol) for migrants to higher education access courses, little more than grudging support is given, as and when "the economy can afford it". But Tuckett reveals how such a constraint at any time is a false economy, creating far greater costs in terms of damage to individual and collective health, welfare, social security and economic advancement. This book is not a diatribe or polemic but a realistic assessment of what Tuckett believes can and should be achieved. It is also a continuation of the conversation he had with his readers for 15 years.
