About the Book

Web Services offer a very versatile and incredibly useful model for distributing application logic and sharing data across standard networks. They can be accessed from any platform, in any language, from virtually anywhere on the Internet. This is due to the simple SOAP protocol, which doesn't limit their useful reach to any specific platform. This book teaches developers how to create and consume web services using ASP.NET on the Microsoft .NET Framework. Most of the processes required to successfully implement a simple provider and/or consumer are very straightforward, so baseline implementation only takes up a small part of the book. The remainder looks at techniques available for tailoring web services to specific applications and scenarios. As well as looking at the technical ramifications of the web service model, its relative merits are also considered in comparison with other methods of distributed computing, and the business or legal issues that will surely play a significant role in the emerging web service infrastructure.
