About the Book

This volume contains 35 present ations on the developments and advances made in tribology. The first five plenary sessions, discussed issues of significant importance to modern tribology: history of tribology in the 20th century; the question of lubrication by very thin oil films under immense pressures; the wear of metals; the relationship of future tribological research to real industrial problems; and a survey of the currrent understanding of the molecular and atomic origins of friction and boundary lubrication.

Table of Contents:
Plenary papers: Progress in tribology - a historical perspective, D. Dowson; High pressure rheology of lubricants and limitations of the Reynolds equation, S. Blair et al; Wear mechanisms, K. Kato; Tribology and the needs of industry, M.J. Neale; Some surface science aspects of tribology, J.M. Georges. Invited papers: Test methods in tribology, A.F. Alliston-Greiner; Combating abrasive-corrosive wear in aggressive mining environments, a. Ball; Lubricants and environment, W.J. Bartz; Realising the potential of duplex surface engineering, T. Bell; tribology of hot metal forming, J.H. Beynon; Micro/manotribology using atomic force/friction force microscopy - state of the art, B. Bhushan; Sliding wear of materials, S.K. Biswas; design and validation of laboratory-scale simulations for selecting tribomaterials and surface treatments, P.J. Blau; Isolated contact stress deformations of polymers - the basis for interpreting polymer tribology, B.J. Briscoe; Practical applications of lubrication models in engines, R.C. Coy; tribochemistry of ceramics - science and applications, T.E. Fischer; Tribology in the space environment, P.D. Fleischauer; The problem-solving role of basic science in solid lubrication, M.N. Gardos; Coating tribology - contact mechanisms and surface design, K. Holmberg et al; Abrasive and erosive wear tests for thin coatings - a unified approach, I.M. Hutchings; Life prediction in rolling element bearings, E. Ioannides; At the boundary between lubrication and wear, B. Jacobson; Tribology as a maintenance tool, Y. Kimura; recent developments in wear-mechanism maps, S.C. Lim; Teaching tribology, K.C. Ludema; Simulation of real contact in tribology, N.K. Stachowiak; The influence of oxidation on the wear of metals and alloys, F.H. Stott; A survey of tribology problems in the process industry and a suggested methodology for problem solving, J.D. Summers-Smith; recent analysis and designs of thick-film bearing, M. Tanaka; Friction and wear of PTFE-filled PPS and the role of PTFE filler, Y. Uchiyama et al; Lubrication and wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in total joint replacements, A. Wang et al; Materials-based concepts for an oil-free engine, M.
