About the Book

Whilst the Legal Profession as well as Parliament have established rules, procedures, legislation, codes of practice and institutions to promote or guarantee open access to membership of the legal profession, nevertheless, discrimination exists. Ethnicity, gender, class, age and university continue to be factors in terms of recruitment into and success within the profession. The authors of the book, all of whom are specialists in their respective fields, have identified various stages in a lawyer's career. The analysis starts with entry into university and finishes with a review of the most senior lawyers. At the various stages, formal and informal barriers are identified and their consequences spelt out. Many of the authors include original data and the findings of their own survey work to support their conclusions.

Edited by Professor Philip Thomas Cardiff Law School, Cardiff University.

Review :
In a new book published by Cavendish Publishing on 24 Nov 2000, Professor Phil Thomas of Cardiff Law School presents new research about discrimination in the legal profession on grounds of race, sex and class. In the foreword to the book, Lord Bingham of Cornhill states: 'Some of the opinions expressed in this book will no doubt provoke dissent. But the underlying problem to which teh book is addressed is a real and important one. All those seeking a remedy should profit from this rational and informed discussion.'
