About the Book

This report draws on a participatory research study involving people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) - an incurable illness characterised by rapidly progressive disability. Based on discussions with people living with MND, through forums and the internet, the report documents their experience of the illness. The report assesses the burden that participation places on people who have debilitating illness or who are approaching end of life and explores how service organisations are able to respond to working with users. It highlights the isolation experienced by many MND sufferers, who have little opportunity to make their views known, and the authors call for the development of locally based and virtual opportunities for contact, communication and involvement. Involving users in shaping Motor Neurone Disease servies is extremely timely in the light of the forthcoming National Service Framework for Long-Term Neurological Conditions and raises important generic issues concerning how to build user participation for rapidly progressive disorders and provides new insights into building user participation generally. The report follows on from a previous project supported by the Foundation, which resulted in the publication of Too ill to talk? User involvement and palliative care by Neil Small and Penny Rhodes (Routledge, ISBN 0 415 23317 8). The Motor Neurone Disease Association has been one of the supporters of the project.

About the Author :
Keren Down is the co-ordinator and community development worker on the Building User Involvement in MND (BUILD) project at Kings College London.
