About the Book

Named after Yeats' 'foul rag-and-bone shop of the heart', THE SHOP, is a showcase for the literary talent of the South of Ireland featuring the works of eminent writers and those still making their way. But it also opens its pages to major poets from all over Ireland and, in the interests of cross-fertilisation, to distinguished foreign writers. The Spring issue starts with a poem by Biddy Jenkinson, with a translation by Ita O'Donovan. There is a section of poems on childhood and youth. Other contributions include Anthony Cronin, Gerald Dawe, Anne Haverty, Fred Johnston, Catherine Phil MacCarthy, John Montague, Leanne O'Sullivan and William Wall.

Review :
JOHN MONTAGUE, POET, CRITIC, FIRST IRELAND PROFESSOR OF POETRY: The SHOp looks like being the best poetry magazine in these islands. SEAMUS HEANEY, POET, CRITIC, NOBEL PRIZEWINNER: First class goods, beautifully presented. Congratulations from this confirmed SHOp-lifter. BRENDAN KENNELLY, POET, CRITIC, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AT T.C.D.: I find delight in the magazine as a purely physical object; it is a joy to handle. And when I read it, I admire the variety and energy of the poems by poets both familiar and new. A sense of elegant experiment pervades the pages. THEO DORGAN, POET, CRITIC, BROADCASTER: We have become a nation of SHOp-keepers. DERMOT BOLGER, POET AND PUBLISHER: The SHOp is a wonderful affair and will become a collector's item... BERNARD O'DONOGHUE, POET AND CRITIC: Unquestionably the most beautiful poetry magazine now in existence. JOHN MOLE, POET AND CRITIC: The artwork is beautifully judged, and what appeals to me about so many of the poems is how unsentimentally humane they are. BELINDA McKEON in THE IRISH TIMES The magazine is a triumph of style and substance. MICHAEL DAVITT, POET, PRODUCER /DIRECTOR SHOpadoireacht feasta, a lucht eigse.
