About the Book

A sensitive collection of 45 diverse poems comprising reflections on religion and the passage of time, travels in America and a moving portrayal of a couple's suffering as the wife succumbs to Alzheimer's disease.

Review :
The poems in this latest collection by noted academic and writer Joseph Clancy, Ordinary Time, appear on first reading to find their inspiration from diverse and varied sources. Moving from the personal, familial relations that define the first section, ‘Days Of Grace’, to the wildlife of the Australian outback in ‘A Change of Sky’, the collection concludes with a long poem, ‘Unselving’, detailing one anonymous couple’s experience of the devastation of Alzheimer’s disease. But although these apparently disparate topics may appear unconnected, the theme of time and its passing, consciously referenced in the title, unites and underpins the variety of subjects that have moved the author. Throughout the collection, Clancy’s plain style and concise language portray time in various guises. Whether it is the bittersweet acceptance with which the speaker in ‘The Given Time’ finds that, despite the difficulties of impending old age, ‘this should be the good time – these years, a / honeymoon’, or the ‘Old Woman’ who, having burned her photographs, is now ‘content to be’, the inevitability of the passing of time is clear and profound. Even in poems written from the perspective of, or describing, Australian wildlife Clancy references the ancient Aborigine tradition of dreamtime, lending the poems and the wildlife they depict a timeless quality that enables them to be seen as containing a meaning beyond their own existence. However it is in the final poem, ‘Unselving’, that the duality of time can be truly seen, as the poet examines the onset and effect of Alzheimer’s. This poem presents a clear contrast to those in the previous sections, where memory and history are seen as the context through which we experience our lives, even when we may not clearly recognize this. In ‘Unselving’, the wife’s illness literally sets her adrift in time and memory and through her loss her husband’s experience of himself, of his ‘private voice’, is somehow diminished: ‘He cannot find / Himself within her inexpressive words.’ This powerful and clear sighted collection offers the reader, through a variety of perspectives and voices, insight into time, its passing and the invaluable response of this writer.
