About the Book

Jonathan Pool, a former marine insurance broker, teacher and ardent sportsman, palindromist, short story writer and humorist, has produced his fourth book of poetry which is entitled, "The Questioner: Thoughts Of A Poetic Man". His latest work which includes themes that are philosophical, scientific, religious, biological, literary, historical and personal, i.e. relating to people, is an attempt to cover a wide range of poetic experience. Readers may find here and there sonnets which appear to be controversial. For example, one poem is entitled, "The Abolition Of Religion", but they are asked to accept that this is simply an exercise in logic which is the result of a lifetime of study and reflection. The belief that the history of individual nations encourages in the reader a mode of thinking that is insular derives from the work of H. G. Wells whose History of the World emphasises that we humans who inhabit planet Earth cannot live in mental isolation. Readings of the Classics and Astronomy have helped to induce further thought which has gone some way in stimulating the creation of two hundred and fifty poems which the author is pleased to share with those who may wish to reflect on the wisdom inherent in the words of Winwood Reade, 'Mind is inhabited by matter; matter is inhabited by mind.' With regret the author is obliged to record that he has no patience with the modern trend in writing verse which resembles prose and very little else. He prefers to uphold the distinction between prose and poetry which by definition is the highest mode of expression in the language to which any writer can aspire. A lover of the sonnet and its brevity, which presents an intellectual challenge, the author is saddened when for the sake of modernity poetry descends into colloquialism.
