About the Book

As the first volume devoted to the clinical and physiological applications of electrical impedance tomography ( EIT ), this timely book is a landmark in the development of a new medical imaging method. EIT enables reconstructed tomographic images of human subjects to be made using a ring of external electrodes; it is non-invasive, safe, portable and inexpensive. EIT is in the process of rapid development, with technical advances anticipated that will reduce the limitations of its spatial resolution and enable it to be used much more widely. Hitherto, the literature has been mainly concerned with technical aspects of the design and construction of the technique. The present volume opens up a broad field of applications, including gastric emptying, gastrointestinal motility, brain function, hyperthermia, pelvic blood volume, and pulmonary ventilation and perfusion. There are extensive introductory reviews which cover all biomedical applications to date, and the available hardware and software. Based on the first-ever international meeting devoted to the clinical and physiological applications of EIT (funded by the EC and held at the Royal Society of London), and including contributions from authors in the UK , Europe and the USA , the book is intended to be useful to readers with backgrounds in physics, engineering, the life sciences or medicine. It should be of interest to all readers concerned with new developments in medical imaging, especially those seeking new techniques that are both practical and non-invasive. "David Holder is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology at University College London and Honorary Lecturer in Neurology at the Maudsley Hospital, London. Trained in clinical medicine and biophysical research, he heads a multidisciplinary group which is actively researching into EIT imaging of function in the brain, chest and bowel. He edited and contributed four chapters to this book; other contributors include Brian Brown and David Barber of the University of Sheffield, who have produced the most widely accepted EIT clinical imaging system, and other authors from the UK , Europe and the USA who are leading figures in the use of EIT in biomedical research.". This book is intended for clinical medical research and medical physics.

Table of Contents:
Biomedical applications of electrical impedance tomography: a critical review, D.S. Holder and B.H. Brown; review of EIT systems available for medical use, Brian Brown; an overview of image reconstruction, D.C. Barber; in-vivo impedance images using sinusoidal current patterns, J.C. Newell, D. Isaacson, M. Cheney.
