About the Book

The "Guide to Resources in Environmental Education" has been developed over 20 years by Peter Berry and others at the Conservation Trust in Reading, England. Its original purpose was to enable members of the Trust, many of whom were teachers or were involved in research, to find out what resources were available to them for teaching purposes or general interest. In the early 1970's these resources were few and far between. Over the years, as interest in the environment has increased greatly, the range and quality of materials has grown beyond recognition. In parallel, the Trust has developed the format for the entries and has built up its own specialist resource bank covering the whole range of environmental subjects. The rate of increase is shown by the fact that this version of the Guide is more than twice the size of the previous version published in 1986. The Guide now serves as a unique reference work for all those who are interested in understanding and providing information about our environment - as teachers, students, researchers, librarians, campaigners, administrators, managers or "ordinary" members of the public. The Guide has an additional function as a catalogue of most of the materials held in the Trust's Resource Bank, with the index numbers (given in square brackets as part of the reference) so that members can borrow the material by post. The Guide is not meant to be exhaustive, and it is not a list of books in print. It is a classified selection of the resourcs that are likely to be most useful to an understanding of the topics which form part of the seamless web of "the environment". The mission of the Trust is to make information about all aspects of the environment available to people of all ages - and different purposes. Consequently, the material covers the age range from young children to university level and adult, it covers publications of many types from the last five decades, and it includes slide sets, packs and games, computer software and other media.
