About the Book

The exhibition "Pu Quan and his Generation: Imperial Painters of Twentieth-Century China" takes place in the Khoan and Michael Sullivan Gallery of Chinese Painting in the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, from 10 December 2004 until 12 March 2005. The paintings come from the collections of the artist's family in Hong Kong, and from a private collection in Oxford. Pu Songchuang (1913-1991) was born into the last generation of the Qing imperial family, a cousin of the last emperor Pu Yi. In the Republican period he taught painting at Fu Ren University in Peking; in 1953 he became a founding member of the Beijing Academy of Painting (Beijing huayuan), with which he was associated for the rest of his life. The exhibition will include paintings from all periods of the artist=s career, documenting a change in style from traditional gongbi birds and flowers, to sweeping landscapes in ink. Some early paintings are executed on Ming dynasty silk from the imperial treasury, while several of the later landscapes in ink on paper depict scenery from the route of the Long March, which Pu travelled in 1956 with a group of artists as part of the celebrations of the anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. Pu Songchuang was a member of leading artistic circles of the late twentieth century. His works are in the Great Hall of the People, Tiananmen and other buildings of national importance in China alongside those of his more famous contemporaries, yet he himself is not widely known. All the paintings in this exhibition are being displayed in public for the first time, and most have never before been published.
