About the Book
"Industrial Performance Analysis" provides an appraisal of 27 major industries, giving an insight into the growth, performance and trends in British industry. In addition, 206 individual sectors within these major industry categories are assessed in detail. The study provides league tables which rank the relative performance of 27 major industries with a series of ratio and growth rates; enabling the reader to identify their strengths and weaknesses. It further provides comparative trends on 206 constituent sectors with an additional 18 league tables. The sectors come under the headings of production, distribution and services. Each industrial grouping can be studied in detail. Profit and loss accounts and balance sheets are compiled for each of the major industries. These show their size and structure, while ratios are provided to assist in the analysis of performance over three years. Productivity trends between sectors can also be monitored with five employee based ratios. The major industries are then broken down into their constituent sectors, which are analyzed in turn.
This provides an opportunity to examine profitability and efficiency at sector level and to measure changes in their competitive positions. In addition, a commentary gives an overview of economic developments, putting into context the environment in which industries and their constituent sectors are operating. Graphs and tables highlight the top performers from those who are under-performing, while UK PLC provides a snapshot of the whole of British industry by showing the average ratios for all industries over three years. The 18 ratios and growth rates used to rank performance in the industry and sector league tables are: return on capital, return on assets, profit margin, asset utilization, sales / fixed assets, stock turnover, credit period, liquidity, quick ratio, borrowing ratio, equity gearing, income gearing, return on shareholder's funds, return on investment, sales growth rate, profit growth rate, total assets growth rate, capital employed growth rate. The information is based on financial information derived from ICC's database of public and private companies; representing the whole of British industry.
Aimed at chief executives, managing directors, business development managers and corporate planners as well as at investment advisers and managers, banking and financial executives and market analysts and reasearchers, "Industrial Performance Analysis" should enable the reader to identify the fastest growing industries, pinpoint the most profitable sectors, monitor the effects of recession and make informed projections and forecasts.
