About the Book

Demonstrating the high level of maturity reached in design optimisation methodologies and applications, this book contains most of the papers presented at the Eighth International Conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design of Structures. The engineering problems featured consist of case studies in mechanical and car engineering, considering issues such as static, dynamic analysis and fracture mechanics. Manufacturing and structural protection issues are presented in several papers, as are emergent application fields such as biomechanics. The contributions on numerical methods include reviews of gradient-based numerical optimisation and search techniques as well as genetic algorithms and the classes of problems solved in structural design such as size, shape and topology optimisation.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Advances in numerical methods: Multi-objective design optimization of automatic fixturing; MINLP optimization approach; Non-uniqueness in cylindrical shells optimisation; Use of genetic programming for automatic synthesis of post-2000 patented analog electrical circuits and patentable controllers; Variational principles in optimal control and their applications. Section 2 Applications in mechanical and car engineering: Analysis of ball bearings using optimization techniques; Structural optimization of an automotive dashboard support by genetic algorithms; Process optimization of automotive blow molded parts; Development and analysis of a prototype car-carrier structure using the finite element method; Numerical determination of dynamic stress concentration factors for an axially loaded strut with elliptical and notch discontinuities; Automated engineering application by internet; Finite element dynamic simulation of a race car; Optimize the load-deflection curve of diaphragm springs for automobile clutches using residual stress; A development of virtual prototyping manufacturing system for high pressure die casting processes. Section 3 Optimisation, manufacturing and protection: Productivity calculations using method of sources and sinks; Linear and nonlinear programming in manufacturing; Describing optimized microstructures for solid freeform fabrication; Optimising the location of anodes in cathodic protection systems. Section 4 Structural optimisation: Minimum weight with stress constraints topology optimisation; Shape optimization with computational fluid dynamic simulation; Topology, shape and standard dimension optimization of trusses; Freeform shape optimization of regular quad meshes; Continuum structural design using local rule; Evolutionary shape optimization with self-adapting mutation distribution based on the Cholesky decomposition; Practical approach to optimum design of steel tubular slip-joint power transmission poles; Morphological optimisation of 2D stayed columns; Cost function analysis at the structural optimization of steel frames; PADO. A computer code for design optimization of steel portal frames; Metaheuristics optimisation techniques for software structure optimisation. Section 5 Optimisation in biomechanics: Compliance matrices of bone tissue phases by optimisation; Helmet optimisation based on head-helmet modelling; Optimum topology design of an interbody fusion implant for lumbar spine fixation.
