About the Book

Numerous special purpose Boundary Element Method (BEM) programmes now exist for a variety of important engineering problems difficult to solve using conventional finite elements. Areas of particular interest include acoustics, cathodic protection, electromagnetics, crack propagation, soil mechanics, damage mechanics, moving boundaries and a variety of viscous flow applications. The success of the BEM is reflected not only in the number of specialised computer codes based on the method, but also in the now routine implementation of boundary element techniques in major finite element systems. Containing papers from the Fifteenth International Conference on Boundary Element Technology (BETECH), this book presents some of the most interesting and recent developments in the method, including its use in solving a variety of industrial problems. Almost 40 papers are included and these are divided under the following headings: acoustics; advanced boundary element techniques; combined modelling approaches; electrochemical and corrosion modelling; fluid flow; fracture and damage; heat transfer; stress analysis; and vibrations and dynamics.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Acoustics: Simulation of automotive noise by advanced boundary element formulations; Active noise control effect on penetration of urban noise from 3-D spaces into enclosures; Application of BEM and cellular automata to determining optimal shapes of the sound-insulating wall. Section 2 Advanced boundary element techniques: Tests for multiple materials in Laplace and plate bending problems; Solution of Poisson equation by Trefftz method and computing point analysis scheme; Analysis of general time-dependent problems with the hybrid boundary element method; Enhanced quasi-multiple medium technology for fast finite-domain electrostatic BEM simulation; Multi stage Monte Carlo optimization applied to systems of integral equations; Treatment of body forces in the method of fundamental solutions for three dimensional elasticity; Computable representations of influence functions for multiply connected Kirchoff plates; Extending the complex variable boundary element method of three dimensions; A new subregion boundary element method; A new algorithm for visualization of domain results in analysis with the Boundary Element Method. Section 3 Combined modelling approaches: Boundary element methods for functionally graded materials; Optimization of slopes using the DEM & BEM; A new model for connections between skeletal and continuum structural elements. Section 4 Electrochemical and corrosion modelling: (Special session organised by V. G. DeGiorgi) Issues in modeling electrochemical corrosion systems; Parametric studies of a shipboard impressed current cathodic protection system using a boundary element code; Combining boundary element and discrete source methods for the modelling of corrosion related magnetic fields; Prediction of the condition of a structure subject to corrosion based on inverse analysis; The intricacies of modeling a simple dipole; On the anomalous asymptotic performance of the regular computer methods for grounding analysis. Section 5 Fluid flow: Combined boundary element and weighted finite difference method for water flow; A corrected BEM for the inclusion of near-field effects associated with suspension flows at low Reynolds numbers; Number of boundary element effects on the productivity performance of an oil reservoir.
