About the Book

Containing edited versions of most of the papers presented at the Eleventh International Conference on Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements (CMEM), this book reviews the latest work on these two approaches, and the interaction between them. As computer models become ever more successful and realistic, they require detailed data in order to develop better experiments. Scientists working on laboratory and field experiments now produce challenging results that sometimes require different interpretation, leading to the reformulation of analytical tools used in established computer codes. This book features over 70 papers providing invaluable information for both scientists specialising in measurement techniques and researchers developing computer codes. The following sections are included: computational and analytical methods; computer interaction and control of experiments; damage mechanics; data acquisition and processing; dynamics and vibrations; electrical and electromagnetic applications; fluid mechanics; structural and stress analysis; and thermal processes.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Computational and analytical methods: Dynamical analysis of frame type structures with local stiffness reductions by a new finite element based on the dynamic stiffness and mass matrices; Consideration of plastic flow near the contact surface of rotating disks under a large pressure; Numerical and experimental analysis of bulk forming processes; Sensitivity analysis and optimisation of thermo-elasto-plastic process with applications to welding side heater design; A simulation of bending by the rigid-plastic hybrid element method; Soil nonlinear stiffness for SSI involving embedded foundations; Modelling the viscosity of natural gas mixtures; Model-based optimisation of gas turbine maintenance; Decision making in mining operations - inaccurate timely data, accurate tardy data. Section 2 Computer interaction and control of experiments: Interaction of experimental and modelling procedure to improve the fatigue behaviour of a metal matrix composite; Computational and experimental process control by combining neurofuzzy approximation with multicriteria optimisation; Overshooting error in inelastic pseudodynamic tests on stiff specimens; A computer aided optical technique for creep strain determination; Integration of computer model of drug delivery with human subject testing; A computer model for the interpretation of soil resistivity measurement data collected in the vicinity of grounding systems. Section 3 Damage mechanics: Crack growth under general load spectrum: numerical simulation and experimental tests; Wrinkling modes of sheet metal during press forming measured by optical reflection of grating; Ultrasonic method of non-destructive testing - quantification, application and computer simulation; Honeycombs onset of failure and failure processes under in-plane loading; Finite element analysis of crack growth from a rectangular notch in mixed mode loading; Noise diagnostics of a single-stage gear unit; A computational model for residual life assessment of dents generated by explosive loads in pipelines; Sensitivity of a stress measurement method for copper electroplating using the effects of stress concentration; Spall strength and flow stress - the dependence of strain-rate and temperature.
