In recent years, the science of electro-magneto-mechanics has developed rapidly because of its possible extensive practical applications in fields such as smart material systems and structures, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), bio-medical devices, superconducting devices, and magnetic fusion reactors. Detailing recent developments in this exciting interdisciplinary field, this volume features a selection of papers presented at the Symposium on Electro-Magneto-Mechanics that formed part of the 14th US National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNCTAM 14). Section 3 Piezoelectric Buckling, Stability and Vibration: Enhancement of buckling capacity of column strips with piezoelectric layer; Variational and differential equations for the dynamics of a coated piezolaminated composite bar; Equations of high-frequency vibrations of porous piezoelectric plates; Frequency stability of piezoelectric resonators; Eigenvalue analysis for 2-D piezoelectric problems by the time-harmonic BEM. Section 4 Smart Sensors and Actuators: Control of transient deformation in a heated intelligent composite disk; Ultrasonic imaging of structural damages using integrated sensor signals; Active vibration suppression of a gossamer spacecraft; Micro-actuators for structural control; Multimodal vibration control by using piezoelectric transducers and passive circuits.
