About the Book

The shock and impact behaviour of structures is an extremely challenging area. It is therefore important to recognize and utilize the contributions emerging from theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on structures, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions. Reflecting the broad range of research work currently being carried out in academic institutions and industry, this book contains the papers presented at the Seventh International Conference on Structures Under Shock and Impact. The topics highlighted are: protection of structures from blast loads; surface structures under explosive shock; missile penetration and explosion; interaction between analytical and experimental research; structural crashworthiness and new software for shock and impact; energy absorbing systems; seismic engineering applications; material characterization; material response to high rate loading; behaviour of concrete structural components; behaviour of steel and composite structures; fluid solid interaction; and analysis of unbound domains.Over 50 contributions are included and these should encourage research workers and designers to apply the methods discussed to many new practical problems.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Protection of structures from blast loads: The response of stiffened square plates subjected to localised blast loading; Composite structural components under blast loading; Protective design of concrete buildings under blast loading. Section 2 Surface structures under explosive shock: Failure analysis of laminated architectural glass panels subjected to blast loading; Dynamic response of thin masonry wall under explosion effect. Section 3 Missile penetration and explosion: Finite element analyses of concrete penetration with a steel projectile. Comparison of Lagrangian and Eulerian techniques; Experimental and numerical investigations into responses of buried R/C frames subjected to impulsive loadings; Modelling of concrete perforation; Penetration into concrete targets by a hard projectile; Ballistic limit curves for cylindrical projectiles impacting dual-wall spacecraft systems. Section 4 Interaction between analytical and experimental research: Iterative experimental / numerical procedure for improvement of dynamic experimental facilities; A theory for small projectiles impact on concrete barriers; Numerical modelling of fracture in stiffened aluminium plates subjected to impact loading; Steel-net rockfall protection - experimental and numerical simulation; Frangibility of airport approach lighting towers. Section 5 Structural crashworthiness and new software for shock and impact: Quasi-static and dynamic axial crushing of circular and square stainless steel tubes; Implicit - explicit time integration algorithms for the numerical simulation of blade / casing interactions; Birdstrike analysis of the wing slats of EF-2000; An efficient simulation of structures under pulse pressure loading; Comparative study of numerical explicit time integration algorithms. Section 6 Energy absorbing systems: Relative role of foam thickness and foam density in the design of a car-body pillar and dashboard in order to optimise the HIC index; Energy absorption and performance of a vehicle impact protection system; Energy absorption characteristics of scaled-down guardrail beams; Crash behavior of obliquely loaded aluminum extrusions; Strain-rate effects on the energy absorption capability of crash boxes with different geometry; Transition between progressive and global buckling of aluminium extrusions; Smart impact absorber; Experimental study on thin-walled grooved tubes as an energy absorption device.
