About the Book

These proceedings contain late-1990s research on the computer modelling of seas and coastal regions under normal and extreme conditions, with special attention to the environmental problems of coastal areas. Topics covered include shallow water models, pollutant transport and dispersion, sewage and chemical pollution, wave propagation, harbours and marinas, coastal erosion, sea defence and protection systems, underwater dunes, coastal lakes and lagoons, oil slicks and atmospheric effects.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 - Estuarine Problems: Influence of river mouth sand spit level on the time variation of river stage and bed topography: Modeling of wave field around Abukuma River mouth, Japan; A comparison of interpolation methods for processing randomly scattered bathymetric data. Section 2 - Shallow Water Models: 2D and 3D modelling of wave-driven currents in presence of a groin system in a tidal sea; A comparison of high resolution schemes for transcritical shallow water flow; Modeling seasonal ocean circulation of Prince William Sound, Alaska using freshwater of a line source; A numerical hydrodynamic-ecological model for the prediction of pollution in the Thermaikos Gulf - Effect of the wind direction; Modelling of wave transformation across the inner surf zone and swash oscillations on beaches; The making of a surface current atlas of the St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada; Modelling currents along the western coast of Estonia as superposition of Helmholtz oscillators; Sea level modelling and forecasting in the Northern Adriatic; Management of the Copenhagen Harbour utilising an integrated 2-dimensional modelling system.
