About the Book

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies are rapidly finding applications in many areas including environmental conservation, resource utilisation, cartography, urban planning, risk assessment, pollution control and transport management systems. Containing most of the papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Geographical Information Systems in the Next Millennium, this book addresses these and other applications. The primary aim of the conference, held in Udine, Italy in July 1998, was to review state of the art GIS technology and to monitor its development in various applied fields. The topics discussed are divided into eight sections: Environmental Management, Applications, Economic Development Management, Data Acquisition, Database Technology, Spatio Temporal Modelling, the WWW and Geographical Information, and GIS Systems.

Table of Contents:
SECTION 1: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Watershed-scale nonpoint source pollution management based on spatiotemporal parameter model and GIS linkage; Managing ecosystems in a watershed context: progress made and the emerging role of integrated spatial information technologies; Geographical information systems for air quality management planning; Integrated water resources management with water reuse in a river basin; STREAM, spatial tools for river basins, environment and analysis of management options; Screening of regional groundwater contamination with agrochemicals and comparison with monitoring observations;Use of a GIS tool for sustainable management of aquifer 08-29 resources in La Mancha, Spain;Automated DEM/DSM accuracy estimates towards land change detection; The role of GIS in the decision support system ODESSEI (open architecture decision support system for environmental impact assessment); Agricultural non-point load of nitrogen to surface waters. A regional estimation in GIS. SECTION 2: APPLICATIONS Development of a volcanic risk assessment information system for the prevention and management of volcanic crisis: stating the fundamentals; A GIS-based program for the analysis of areas subjected to hydrological risk; GIS for earthquake hazards mitigation in the Friuli area (NE Italy); Using a GIS approach for setting up a coastal alluvial aquifer intrinsic vulnerability map; Integration of geochemical, geological and geophysical data from the Paqueiro mine area (PR-Brazil) with a GIS; Development of a GIS based system for highway analysis; GIS in the process of road design; Using GIS to site the Beirut-South mountain highway (SMH); SECTION 3: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT SITAI: a geographic information system for the industrial areas of Sardinia; Application of GIS in an expert system for wastewater irrigation; Urban growth modelling and GIS; A GIS application for regional planning. SECTION 4: DATA ACQUISITION Laserscanning for DEM generation; Environmental mapping made simple; ready-to-use GIS information from remotely sensed SAR data; GPS and GIS to assess the accuracy of land cover maps in mountain areas. SECTION 5: GIS TECHNOLOGY The prerequisites for the development of a global open geographic information system; IDR visor map: a simple and friendly geographical information system; An overview of the SDM technology; Modelling dispersion phenomena in tidal environments use of cellular automata in GIS applications; A metadata WWW site on the Venice Lagoon; The development of web-based geographic information processing software; Virtual geographic world: the web-based 3D GIS;
