About the Book

Multinational Enterprise and Public Policy is a timely and instructive analysis of the relations between multinational corporations and the governments of the industrialized states. Traditional studies have emphasized the activities of multinational corporations in the developing economies, while ignoring their less dramatic, but no less significant, role in the political and economic life of the industrialized nations.A.E. Safarian has written a comprehensive account of policy development in 15 industrial countries over the past three decades which questions both the motivation and effectiveness of government policy in relation to multinationals. He explains how government policies have evolved, comparing the application of specific policies such as restricted sectors, investment review and investment incentives. In conclusion, he offers a masterly assessment of recent progress towards more liberal and better targeted government policies. This work offers a wealth of data and makes a comparative analysis that has rarely been attempted on this scale before. It will be an invaluable reference companion for every serious student of international business.

Review :
'This book should be recommended to all students of international economic policy and international business. It contains a clear and comprehensive conceptualisation of public policy on MNE allowing the classification and evaluation of country policies. The author supplies a vast amount of institutional policy details and economic data, which are interesting in their own right.' 'The value of this book lies in its author's expertise. Safarian knows his subject so well that he can make cross-country comparisons with ease. He is particularly excellent in dealing with the similarities and differences between Canadian and Australian policies on inward investment. I found all the case studies extremely informative. . . . In an era when books and articles on multinational proliferate, this volume stands out as refreshing and, indeed, represents a major contribution to the field.' 'This work is certainly informative on and useful for each of the six Anglo-Saxon nations as well as Japan. . . . the book is well laid out and clearly written, the reader would certainly benefit from accessing specific sections.’ 'This is an important, thoroughly researched book that represents many years of study and effort. It is rigorous and integrates the areas of international business, micro- and macroeconomic policy and business strategy.' '. . . his book is not only an excellent scholarly treatise, but it offers a valuable history lesson to contemporary governments on their power and their limitations to effect both the extent of inbound and outbound investment, and its consequences for the economic welfare of their citizens.' 'A.E Safarian's Multinational Enterprise and Public Policy is genuinely welcome. It breaks new ground. . . . The value of this book lies in its author's expertise.' 'Professor Safarian's book if timely and informative with historical development and data to search the wisdom in this direction. The study will have profound implications for governments in both the developed and the developing world.'
