About the Book

The Finnish poet Eira Stenberg writes mainly about home life, but she deals with family relationships like an exorcist casting out demons. She views the conflicts of marriage, divorce, motherhood and childhood with a ruthless eye. The male may meet a hostile, disenchanted eye, a levelled carving knife, but the mother too must see its point, and the rather demonic child. Her poems are full of politics – sexual and family politics, observation of the living strategies of dead grandfathers and grandmothers, and the often unwise ideas their wise men left behind. There are also more overt gestures to the larger family: ‘The concentration camps are set up at home.’ In spite of her tragic view, her poetry can be tender and playful, and she writes with wit, even humour, and a relish of the tongue in her head. Hers is a deadly mind, but the deadliness springs from a lively love of life. Her work is a tool for locating the enemies of happiness, whether these are decomposing ideas, family history, psychological cesspools or institutions.

About the Author :
Eira Stenberg was born in 1943, studied piano at the Sibelius Academy, literature at the University of Helsinki, and graduated in humanities in 1968. She made her debut in 1966 as an experimental poet with her work Kapina huoneessa, wrote children’s books in the 1970s, and resumed poetry writing at the end of the decade. In her poems and novels, she has examined themes such as the enigma of family life and problems in the relationship between man and woman, such as in her poetry collections Vedenalainen silta, 1979, Erokirja, 1980, Parrakas madonna, 1983, and Siksi seurustelen varkaiden kanssa, 2002, and in her novels Paratiisin vangit, 1984, and Oven takana, 2005. Her novels Häikäisy, 1987, and Kuun puutarhat, 1990, describe children and teenagers as they go through an identity crisis, taking sexuality as the starting point. Her novel Gulliverin tytär, 1993, is a critique of civilisation and a continuation of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, 1726. Her work was first published in Britain in Herbert Lomas’s award-winning anthology Contemporary Finnish Poetry (Bloodaxe Books, 1991).
