About the Book

Derek Mahon called John Montague 'the best Irish poet of his generation'. He commanded a pivotal place in contemporary Iris poetry: a vital link between the generation of Patrick Kavanagh and younger poets like Heaney, Mahon and Muldoon, whose style and internationalism owe much to his example. Mount Eagle, his eighth collection, showed him moving into new territory: Native American legends, fish-eye and bird-view perspectives. It is infused with richness, warmth and maturity, and begins and ends with the myth of the reborn salmon. Inbetween are poems on his persistent themes: the Ulster where he was reared, the healing force of nature, family and children, and 'erotic poems of charged sexual encounter' (Terence Brown).

About the Author :
John Montague (1929-2016) was one of Ireland’s leading poets, and was the first holder of the Ireland Chair of Poetry. He published three books of poetry with Bloodaxe during the 1980s. His major poetry publications include The Rough Field, The Great Cloak, The Dead Kingdom, Mount Eagle, Time in Armagh and Smashing the Piano. His Collected Poems appeared from the Gallery Press in 1995, the year he received the American Ireland Fund Literary Award. His recent Gallery titles include Drunken Sailor (2004) and Speech Lessons (2011). His New Collected Poems was published in 2012, and followed by his posthumously published final collection Second Childhood in 2017. He translated Francis Ponge’s Selected Poems with Margaret Guiton and C.K. Williams (Wake Forest University Press, USA & Faber, UK).

Review :
The dominant theme of this collection of poems is praise. It celebrates the fecundity of the natural world and the continuing survival of love. Man and plant and animal are endangered species, so the collection is poignant with the sense of imminen loss... The forty-three poems reflect the poet in many moods -- sensual, meditative, forboding, reminiscent, evocatory -- but all celebrate the miracle of experience. This celebration is won in the face of the darker themes of the book... he seems to have set himself the task of couching the eternals of love, the local and nature in contemporary language... It is replete with humour, hope and renewal.
