About the Book

This volume is part of the "Exploring the past" series which promotes an investigative approach to history and encourages children to explore the past through what they can see or find out from their surroundings. An illustrated, activity-based book, "Exploring schools" looks at the active study of history through the subject of schools. There are ideas on how to gather information and use it in a positive and constructive manner, plus historical background to help clarify the results. The work begins by suggesting a project on the reader's own school and noting what information can be gained from its name and buildings etc. There are ideas on finding out about schools in the recent past, by talking to older people, looking at photographs and collecting memorabilia and from these noting how schools and teaching methods have changed. The author then looks at Victorian schools and how they can be investigated through accounts in autobiographies and questions from school books of the time. The reader is asked to imagine what life was like for pupils of such schools. The different types of schools - public schools, grammar schools and girls' schools are discussed and the book suggests ways of finding out about examples of these in the reader's area. Finally, the very earliest schools in churches and monasteries are considered. The text is accompanied by a timeline with dates and events in the history of schools, to help structure the reader's own investigations, as well as a list of museums to visit and further reading suggestions. The series is intended to provide background reading for GCSE studies and Standard Grade in Scotland.
