About the Book

The increasing speed and expanded storage capacity of modern high-performance computers, together with new advanced numerical methods and programming techniques, have greatly improved the ability to solve complex engineering problems. As the power of the supercomputers grow, the complexity of the problems which can be solved also increases. The application of supercomputing for numerical intensive problems brings several new issues to the fore that do not appear in standard computing. New algorithms and codes are required in order to exploit effectively the use of these novel computer architectures. There is a constant need to bridge the gap between the hardware and software so that the new machines can be used to their full potential. This book presents the edited versions of papers presented at an international conference held in Bath, UK in September 1993. The purpose of the conference was to present the state of the art in new supercomputing applications particularly as they related to algorithms for parallelization, visualization and graphics, applications in fluid flow, applications in structural mechanics; software tools and environments, vector and parallel finite and boundary elements and massively parallel systems. This book will be of interest to mechanical, civil and aerospace engineers interested in the most recent developments in supercomputing applications.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Algorithms for parallelization: the parallel solution of banded linear systems by the block stride reduction algorithm; parallel implementation of simulated annealing by distributed memory systems; job shop scheduling by a parallel approach. Part 2 Visualization and graphics: now you see it - interactive visualisation of large datasets; a low cost, transputer based visual display processor; a dynamically switched transputer based computation system. Part 3 Applications in fluid flow: the implementation of a general purpose FORTRAN harness for an arbitrary network of transputers for computational fluid dynamics; solving the 2d shallow water equations by explicity and ADI methods on a distributed memory parallel computer; on a coarse-grained parallel code to simulate reactive flows on an IBM RS/6000 workstation-cluster. Part 4 Applications in structural mechanics: parallelisation of the SDEM distinct element stress analysis code; supercomputer applications in 2-d and 3-d transient dynamics; possibilities of computer networking in structural and mechanical engineering. Part 5 Software tools and environments: toward an automatic mapping of DSP algorithms onto parallel processors; an approach to program representation of the R & F systolic LU-factorization algorithm; "Paradigm-Oriented" design of parallel iterative programs using functional languages. Part 6 Vector and parallel finite and boundary elements: symmetry and BEM on transputers; a parallel finite element software package - design and implementation; Monte Carlo parallel algorithms. Part 7 Massively parallel systems: quantum mechanical paradigm for a truly massively parallel computer; massively parallel computing and the boundary element method; simulating some complex wave scattering problems on CM-2 connection machine by pseudospectral time-marching.
