About the Book

'Surely,' he told himself, 'black couldn't come up again. According to the law of averages it has to be red this time.' How life can change with the roll of the dice, the spin of a wheel. Richard Moristone gambles everything in an all or nothing bet. But he will gamble with more than money as he struggles to pay his debts. 'Who's there?' she called timidly; squinting her brown eyes, as she stopped for a second and peered into the gloom. Only the creaking of the tree branches as they swayed in the wind, and the rippling of the stream as it ran into the pond, could be heard in reply. A nervous smile played on her lips as she hunched her shoulders and carried on hesitantly, a shiver going down her spine. The fates of three strangers become entangled as Moristone pulls all their strings like a morbid puppeteer. Will Detective Inspector Laxton be able to prevail over such a desperate man or is his fate similarly sealed?

About the Author :
Born in Sheffield, Ernest Barrett was the eldest of seven children. He was called up for National Service in 1948 and after signing on, spent six and a half years in the R.A.F. After leaving the forces he took a job at the steel works in Rotherham. He later moved to Lincolnshire after suffering a life changing accident at the steel works in 1968. After struggling to cope with his injuries he eventually got a job with the Skegness council, where he stayed until his retirement in 1995. After an Open University course he took up writing poetry and short stories. Although he didn't complete the course (much to his regret) it was a great help. This was followed by him joining the Skegness Writers.
