About the Book

How should case studies be selected? Is case study methodology fundamentally different to that of other methods? What, in fact, is a case?

Case Study Research: What, Why and How? is an authoritative and nuanced exploration of the many faces of case-based research methods. As well as the what, how and why, the author also examines the when and which - always with an eye on practical applications to the design, collection, analysis and presentation of the research.

Case study methodology can prove a confusing and fragmented topic. In bringing diverse notions of case study research together in one volume and sensitising the reader to the many varying definitions and perceptions of 'case study', this book equips researchers at all levels with the knowledge to make an informed choice of research strategy.

Table of Contents:
What Is a Case Study? When to Conduct a Case Study? How to Select Cases? What Data to Collect? How to Enrich Your Case Study Data? How to Analyze Your Data? Assets and Opportunities

Review :
′This book is an excellent source for graduate students and researchers in various disciplines immersed in an old positivistic paradigm or a new evidence-based scientific movement. It offers precise advice regarding case study design, steps to be followed in conducting it, and a secure epistemological-methodological space in which appropriate strategies lead to solutions/answers′ -

The Qualitative Report
Useful but this is a competitive field and it has to compete against established classics like Yin Ver suitable for case study course work Clear and easy to follow. Makes teaching and learning the subject easy. It provides a specific look into the issues surrounding using a case study in research - this is great for more detail compared to general research texts. Very good book, very help, makes a clear explanation of the ins and outs of casestudy research. This is a welcome addition to the literature on case study research. It most helpfully gives an excellent overview on case study research. This book will suplement the main course text by Yin this book is very good for every researcher who is new in the using of case study. it explains case study with very simplest way.
The book does not really focus on how to use case studies and what to make of them as a teaching tool. It does not address students for that purpose. But it is a very good source for understanding how to use case studies for research purposes. For that purpose, I′d definitely suggest it. for our course, this book is too positivist. Yet, for some students it will be a helpfull guide Am recommending for supplementary use in class. Clear and thorough text on case study.

I have skimmed the contents of the book and this seems to supplement Merriam Shannon′s and Robert Yin′s arguments to support case study design. I particularly like the lists of examples provided as appendices and exercise questions at the end of every Chapter which would help me engage my students in different tasks. As a whole I believe it is a good addition in the existing knowledge domain to support case study research. The style of writing, however, appeared to me as an academic essay. A very simplistic and easy understanding of case study research. This is a very useful addition to the standard texts on Case Studies. I have recommended it to the library and to students. A comprehensive overview of the literature and practicalities of Case Study Research. Easily accessible format with clear guidelines and advice for students embarking on case studies. For MA students and research students, good text for specific area that isn′t covered in enough depth in general research texts. Good, easy to follow overview A useful text in places and well structured. This is an excellent book for undergraduate students about the embark on their dissertation research. It is practical, concise and student friendly. Case study research what, why and how examines the ways in which qualitative and quantitative research methods can be used within case study research. The book contains seven chapters which locate case study research methodology within a broad methodological framework. The text provides a useful bibliography which can be used as a guide to the key publications written about case study research. This book is informative for students and researchers from different fields of research as it covers issues relating to the theory and the ongoing science debate about case study research, in terms of the problem of generalisation and application of theory to case study research. It illustrates how to analyse the data collected from case studies and the author presents the concept of ‘degrees of freedom’ which relates to useful techniques which can be employed to increase the reliability of the data gathered and analysed from case studies. The book contains end of chapter exercises and provides useful lists of key terms. The reading level of this book is suitable for postgraduate students and researchers. Case study research what, why is essential reading for students and researchers seeking to understand the theoretical background to case studies and the research methods that can be employed within them. A very useful text for those who do case studies. It′s a useful text for students to cosult, and is authoritative in tone.
Having just considered Thomas (2011) I consider the latter to be more accessible and fesh for a UK readership of final year undergarduates and professionals undratking taugt master′s programmes. I ve recommended the text not only to my students, but also to some colleagues This is a very good general introduction to the case study methodology. It does a good job of covering all the relevant pros and cons of case studies, and is reasonable in its discussion of the method′s limitations. The book lacks specificity to my field (business studies), and that is the only reason why I would not make it mandatory reading. The author manages to say an awful lot in few words, which makes a refreshing change. For researchers wishing to understand the method, it is a worthy text. There was one problem: the writer does not discuss the philosophical status of the case study method. Grounded theory is mentioned, but alternatives are not. This is a much needed, very readable and accessible book. I will not only be suggesting this to undergraduates and masters level students but also to the clinicians with whom I have contact. It is a useful book for students to have access to when they consider case studies for their practice placements, in terms of considering how their case studies might potentially be shaped for research and evaluation purposes. It also makes it possible for clinicians to see practically how they can develop work through their current case loads. The book discusses relevant issues that students need to know about Case Study research in a concise and understandable language Fantastic guide to Case study research Good satelite text

A useful supplemental book for those students considering research methodologies. The text is easily understood and helpful for students at post graduate level. Recommend reading for those adopting the Case Study approach to their research. Great book - does what it says! This is helpful, readable guide that introduces and develops key elements of case study process and design. The examples allow readers to see how theory can be translated into a range of real life contexts. The seven chapters attempt to systematically unravel some of the complexities of this intersting methodology. The book does not locate case study research within a particular onotological position - it is therefore more suitable for undergraduates and those studying within a positivistic/empirical tradition. Our course includes a grounded theory approach, in which case studies are more than just a less valid type of statistical analysis. This book has therefore not been adopted. As an overview reference texts of the basics of case study research, this volume is ideal. It is written in very accessible language, works through the process in detail, and, as is the hallmark of many Sage publications, gives exercises for the student at the end of each chapter, which are very useful. It will be a recommendation for any student undertaking - or contemplating - case study research This book provides a detailed and well-written insight into arguments for case study research. I recommend this book as essential for every geographer who does research by conducting case studies. I recommend this book to any practitioners considering case study research.
It was easy to read and gave practical advice about how to undertake case studies effectively whilst considering the limitations of case studies and how to make the research have value. It is suitable for those who are new to research and those who have limited experience. Received only last week and have lent out to a Masters Student for usage and review, and will then also personally review. This excellent and contemporary publication very usefully pulls together classic and contemporary ideas relevant to case study design.
Swanborn′s critical approach to many issues relate to this partiular research strategy is very accessible and illustrative, giving detailed and specific insight into how case study may be used in applied sciences.
Will recommend it both to undergraduate and postgraduate students and indeed it will be also a useful source for my own research This book is extremely useful to the substantial number of students on this programme who want to do case studies. It is accessible and thorough and makes an excellent addition to basic text books on research methodology and methods. For graduate students whose research questions would benefit by being addressed by the case study method this book provides a range of alternatives, much greater than provided by similar books. For those students who might consider providing case studies to aid understanding of data or for those whose data might provide greater insight if organised into one or more case studies, this book provides accessible and cdetailed guidance. Useful, it will be between this book and the Yin book for next year. This one is better but also a bit dated.
