About the Book

High quality electrical service is everyday more stringent in utilities and industrial facilities around the world. One of the main players to achieve this is the protection system, which has to be reliable, fast and with a good cost/benefit ratio. This book refers to most aspects of electrical protections, with emphasis on Distribution Systems. Protection of generation and transmission systems are also treated in the text. References to modern topics such as the Distributed Generation, Smart Grid and Standard IEC 61850 have been introduced. Written by two well experienced engineers who combine a comprehensive theoretical background with examples and exercises, this book will allow the reader to easily follow the ideas explored. The book will be valuable to pre and postgraduate students, design, maintenance and consulting engineers as well as instructors looking for proper references.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Calculation of short-circuit currents Chapter 3: Classification and function of relays Chapter 4: Current and voltage transformers Chapter 5: Overcurrent protection Chapter 6: Fuses, reclosers and sectionalisers Chapter 7: Directional overcurrent relays Chapter 8: Differential protection Chapter 9: Distance protection Chapter 10: Protection of industrial systems Chapter 11: Industrial plant load shedding Chapter 12: Protection schemes and substation design diagrams Chapter 13: Communication networks for power systems automation Chapter 14: Installation, testing and maintenance of protection systems Appendix: Solutions to exercises

About the Author :
Juan M. Gers obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering at University of Valle, Colombia, in 1977. In 1981 he finished an MSc at the University of Salford in England and his PhD in 1998 at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. He has been working as consulting engineer and university lecturer for over 30 years. Dr. Gers is a Chartered Engineer of the IET and Member of the IEEE. Ted Holmes graduated from Queen Mary, University of London in 1950 and joined the CEGB, where he worked for over 35 years. A Fellow of the IEE and a Chartered Engineer, he is co-author of the book Electricity Distribution Network Design. He passed away in July of 2006 after fighting a long illness.

Review :
'Distributed energy resources connected to the distribution system, as well as the requirements for reducing the fault clearing time are some of the drivers for a different approach to distribution systems protection. That is why the third edition of Protection of Electricity Distribution Networks is a timely update of the popular book that represents a practical resource for graduate students, practicing engineers and many others with interest in the subject. The authors of the book are two engineers with huge practical and teaching experience that well understand the subject matter, as well as how to present it in an understandable manner.'
