About the Book

The internet is making profound changes to our representative democracy. Complex and inclusive communication has always defined democracy. But recent technological developments have significantly increased the scope for complex and inclusive dialogue so that active participants in the political forum no longer need to participate at a definite time and place. With the rapid development and widespread use of new technologies, coherent mass decisions can now be taken directly by people outside of mainstream politics and implemented immediately - by-passing the traditional forms and processes of deliberative and representative democracy. The essays in this book are about the implications of wide and spontaneous inclusion for the deliberative democratic process and raising the prospect of a new form of representative democracy. They consider how we might determine who is to be included, whether new complex social systems are really more truthful and how democratic form is evolving to accommodate greater openness of discourse.
