About the Book

In 1885 Jim Puttrell became the first to climb on Wharncliffe Crags for the sheer enjoyment of the activity. Later he pioneered numerous climbs on many other crags and his record of over 150 first ascents in the Peak District was unequalled during his lifetime. Jim then ventured to North Wales where experienced climbers noticed his ability. Jim also climbed with the remarkable O.G. Jones and accompanied the Abraham brothers to Scotland and the Alps. Jim was a founder member of the Climbers' Club and an early member of the Kyndwr Club. The latter, under Jim's leadership, explored the Peak District caverns around Castieton. They also explored the caverns of Mattock and descended the old lead mine shafts in search of the lost hot spring. Ernest Baker had twice attempted to climb the High Tor Gully at Matlock but had failed on both occasions. Jim and his companions made the first ascent in 1903 and in a fit of pique Baker belittled their feat. The ensuing controversy eventually caused the decline of the Kyndwr Club. In 1906 the Kyndwr Club was reformed as The Derbyshire Pennine Club with Jim as the first president. Over the following years he explored caverns in the Yorkshire Dales and Ireland. From 1926 to 1931 the BBC broadcast twenty-one of his talks on rambling, climbing and cave exploration, Jim was appointed president of The Nottingham Mountaineering Club and The Sheffield Climbing Club. It is believed that his continued exertions resulted in the heart condition from which Jim Puttrell died in 1939 at the age of seventy.
