About the Book

A delightful seaside tale of a special friendship between two rather unusual friends - Duck (a shelduck) and Starfish. Duck can't find her mum and Starfish decides to help her. Together they visit a number of different sea creatures with no success until Duck and Starfish meet the human who is finally able to help them.

About the Author :
Derek Brockway works for the Met Office as a weather forecaster, preparing and presenting the lunchtime and nightly TV forecasts for BBC Wales Today and bulletins for BBC Radio Wales. He was born in Barry and after periods spent in London, Birmingham and the Falklands, he now lives in the village of Miskin near Cardiff. He is famed for his energetic and enthusiastic style of presenting Suzanne Carpenter lives in Newport, South Wales and her bold and colourful illustrations are full of humour.

Review :
What a sweet book! Duck searches for his mother on the beach with Starfish’s help. They meet people and sea creatures, but no one seems able to tell them anything – until the Weatherman comes to the rescue. The repetitive style will please young readers, and the clear, bright images are attractive and welcoming to the eye. At the back of the book are some small fact files about the creatures Duck meets on the beach, so the book combines a story with the opportunity for broader knowledge. Brockway has also translated the tale into Welsh. And don’t worry – it’s a happy ending! The story offers lots of important messages for young readers: the importance of friendship, co-operation, respect for the natural world and the appeal of the great outdoors, as well as age-appropriate information about Welsh sealife. The final spread of this fictional story will include factual material about weather and the seashore. The text offers a repeating pattern for maximum enjoyment and shared participation. The illustrations are fresh, appealing and original, with the kind of inventive humour unique to Suzanne Carpenter. Duck is actually a shelduck – and Suzanne Carpenter’s illustrations make it quite clear that she belongs to a special class of birdfowl which inhabits salt as well as fresh water. ************************************ Derek Brockway releases his first children’s book Duck and Starfish Make a Splash is a charming picture book for children of 4 – 7 years old. Down on the beach, it’s a lovely sunny day, but Duck isn’t happy. She’s lost her mum, and can’t find her anywhere! But help soon arrives in the form of her new friend Starfish. Together they search the beach, meeting various people and seashore creatures along the way. All of them are too busy to help – until they meet the friendly weatherman, relaxing in his deckchair. With a bit of teamwork, they soon track down Duck’s mum, and happiness is restored - all thanks to the help of Duck’s unlikely friends! The book is also available in the Welsh language, aimed at children of 4 – 7 years old who are learning Welsh. The Welsh version is called Sblash! gyda Fflap a Seren and is the first in a new series called Bant â Ni: Easy-peasy Welsh. As a Welsh learner himself, Derek strongly believes that it’s important for parents and children to learn the language together. The story uses patterns of repition, simple text and recurring sentence structures, all of which are vital buliding blocks in the learning of a new language. The book also has a vocabulary section and English language translation to aid beginners. Derek Brockway is of course best known as ‘Derek the Weatherman’ from BBC Wales TV. This is his first book for children and was quite a departure from the day job! But he had a lot of fun creating a story that could be enjoyed by even his youngest fans, and is looking forward to meeting them as he promotes the book in the run up to Christmas. The idea came to him whilst relaxing on the beach during a well earned holiday, and was brought to life by experienced children’s books illustrator Suzanne Carpenter. Suzanne Carpenter’s bold, bright, stimulating illustrations are full of warmth and character. Her images are always popular with young children, and have won her a legion of fans across the country. She is a regular visitor to schools and libraries across Wales, where she has a lot of fun creating art with the children. A percentage of the income from each book sold will be donated to children’s hospice Tŷ Hafan, which is based in the Vale of Glamorgan, but offers its services to families across Wales. This is a charity that both Derek and Suzanne feel passionate about, and they hope that the book will raise both the spirits of the children and money for the charity.
