About the Book

British artist David Remfry RA (b.1942) is perhaps best known for his large-scale watercolours, often of people dancing, as well as his landscapes of New York and his images of residents and friends painted and drawn during his twenty years living and working at the Chelsea Hotel, New York City. Yet this focus underestimates the breadth of Remfry's artistic contribution, as this book, the first in-depth account of his work, makes clear. With chapters written by leading figures within the art and literary worlds, this insightful publication covers themes such as the influence of dance and fashion and the role of abstraction within Remfry’s oeuvre. Featuring over 150 images drawn from across Remfry's varied career, this book will provide an unrivalled account of a truly innovative, original artist.

Review :
'David Remfry RA is one of Britain's most celebrated contemporary painters; an observer of both individual subjects and social worlds. Over six decades, he has studied details of gesture, expression and dress, as well as the interior settings in which our daily or nocturnal lives play out. This comprehensive volume charts the evolution and breadth of output, confirming him as a painter not only of beguiling appearances but of human psychology in its myriad shades.' - James Cahill, author, critic and art historian 'David Remfry's absolute lust for life is palpable in everything he does. But just as life is complex, so is David's work: joyful and soulful in equal measure, but always beautiful, each stroke of his brush a cornucopia of what it feels like to be alive.' - Alan Cumming, actor, writer and presenter
